What Is Dual Diagnosis?
When addiction and a mental health condition show up together, treating one and ignoring the other rarely holds. At Sun County Wellness, our women-only team in San Juan Capistrano treats both at the same time, with one plan and one care team, in a calm, private outpatient setting built for women.
Dual diagnosis (also called co-occurring disorders) means a person has a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. Examples include alcohol use alongside depression, stimulant use alongside anxiety or ADHD, or opioid use alongside PTSD. The two conditions feed each other. Substances can mask symptoms in the short term and deepen them over time, and untreated symptoms can make relapse more likely.
